Posted by espenpre on 12:17 AM in Medical, My life

orlive.jpgThis site is so cool! Here you can access all kinds of different surgeries any time. You can also look at real time surgeries and ask the doctor that’s operating questions witch he’ll answer there and then, during the operation!! That’s just so cool! And the operations are saved on the site for one year, so you can go back and see it time after time after time…. And they have some pretty cool operations too. So go and check it out at www.orlive.com

The new semester…..

Posted by espenpre on 7:53 PM in Medical, My life

Now the new semester, semester 4 of my medical study, are well underway. We have come to the middle of the first week, and we have started some cpr-41.jpgnew subjects. We have started with psychology, where we have an actual English (British) doctor, and that is very good for a change to not second guess if the teacher means to say that word or if he/her actually means to say something else! We have also started history of medicine, witch’s seems ok, and medical sociology, witch seems ok too. The carrot, as I see it, this semester is firs aidcpr-21.jpg and nursing. This course seems to be very interesting and it’s a practical course, not just theory. We had the first lecture and class today, and we started with CPR training. One of the manikins where plugged inn to a computer and we could cpr-61.jpgsee how we where doing! It was cool, you could see if you where pumping too hard, or to soft, and if your rhythm were good.

Herniation of the Nucleus Pulposus

Posted by espenpre on 11:20 PM in Medical, My life

discslipp1.jpg Herniation or protrusion of the gelatinous nucleus pulposus into or through the anulus fibrosus is a well-recognized cause of low back and lower limb pain. Although the IV (inter vertebral) discs in youngerman1.jpg persons are strong I experienced this in the summer of 2000, at the age of only 19.

Herniations of the nucleus pulposus usually extend posterolaterally, where the annulus fibrosus is relatively thin and does not receive support from either the posterior or anterior longitudinal ligaments. Chronic pain resulting from compression of the spinal nerve roots by the herniated disc is referred to the area (dermatome) supplied by the nerve. Because the IV discs are largest in the lumbar and lumbosacral regions, where movements are consequently greater, posterolaterally herniations of the nucleus pulposus are most common here. lumbar1.jpgApproximately 95 % of lumbar disc protrusions occur at the L4-L5 or L5-S1 levels. Mine were at the site of L4-L5. This caused the pain to shoot down over the sacroiliac joint, back of the hip, lateral thigh and leg. Andfoot1.jpg then over the lateral leg and it passes over the front and to the first 3 toes. The pain is a shooting pain, like when foot falls asleep, but with pain!

The marked decrease in the radiographic intervertebral space (i.e., in disc height) that may occur as a result of acute herniation of a nucleus may also result in narrowing of the IV foramina, perhaps exacerbating the compression of the spinar nerve roots, especially if the hypertrophy of the surrounding bone has also occurred.

I head the operation during the summer of 2000 and I’m all good now!
